Saab began to decline, and by the time of the financial crisis of 2008 was in serious trouble. The business was no longer profitable, and GM had no resources to invest in its acquisition because the parent company itself was forced into bankruptcy by the financial crisis. For the last two years, GM has been looking for a potential buyer. As the search continued in 2008 and 2009, there was talk by GM that the company would be shut down if no suitable buyer could be found. In late 2009, GM agreed to sell it to Spyker of the Netherlands. Spyker is a small, specialty car maker of high-performance sports cars, and there is some concern as to whether it will be able to manage the much larger company. Sales in the United States declined 35% in 2009, from 3,150 cars in 2008 to 2,058 in 2009. The next couple of years should be much better for Saab; Saab will introduce a new Saab 9-4x in 2010, and a new Saab 9-3 is slated for 2012.
